Golf clubs in Trivandrum

Golf clubs in Trivandrum have rich culture and are famous for their tradition. As we know that golf was brought to India by the British officers, still golf is not a popular game in Kerala. Trivandrum is the capital city of kerala, so it has a rich tradition of golfing. Golf is no as popular as cricket and football in Kerala. Golf is admired and played only by a selected section if people in kerala. In the ancient time golf was played only by British officers, Indians were not allowed to take part in the game.

G V Raja is the man behind formation of Golf club association of kerala. The Trivandrum Golf club is among the oldest golf of India. The club was developed during 1850’s by the Maharaja of Travancore. In the history it was a major site of attraction for tourist and travelers. The club has a history of 150 years but still the club has the smallest golf course. It is evident from this that no initiative was takes in the development of the course. The golf club has a 9 hole short course of Yards – 2645 and par 34. The course is spread over an area of 25 acres with around 3400 trees and over 1000 species of birds. The golf course of the club are mostly straight and wide. The Trivandrum golf course is small, handy course to play golf. Hope the in future the course develops in to a 18 hole course.


Coimbatore Golf Club

Coimbatore Golf Club was started in 1977. Coimbatore golf club was formed by a group of golf lovers from Coimbatore jail started playing golf in a nine hole course at the heart of the city. Coimbatore Golf club came to reality with the help of Mr.K Rajagopal chairman of the Lakshmi Mills Group. His determination helped to bring quality golf club with high standard golf courses in Coimbatore. The golf course is situated at Chettipalayam, 16 kilometers from the city.

History:

Coimbatore Golf Club is been constantly improving over recent years with help the dedication and determination of its members. A fully functional golf course was started in 1985.

Today the Coimbatore Golf Club golf course here have developed to world class standards, they provide the golfers with pleasure and latest facilities. The Coimbatore golf club has large number of employs from course maintenance staffs to caddies.

The Coimbatore golf club has implanted some innovative methods to recycle waste water and use them effectively. They have also maintained the ecology by planting numerous exotic trees all around the course.

With the aim of providing extensive golfing facilities the Coimbatore Golf club is planning to construct a new club house meeting international standards. Kundale Golf Club

The kundale golf club is a very beautiful club in hilly areas of munnar. The Kundale Golf Club course is located in between old tea plantations.  The lovely scenaries, the green carpet, the hills and fragrance of tea are pleasant enough to attract golfers.

High Range Golf Club

The high range golf club earlier known as The Gymkhana Club was started as a planters club in 1905 with a loan of Rs 2500/- for the planters of kerala. The high range club was later set up in 1909 and completed in 1910.

The high range golf club also has the records for being the first planters club to be electrified. The high range golf club got its telephone connection long back in 1916. The Trivandrum Club is the first club to be affiliated to the High range club in 1915.

The high range golf club was visited by the Lord Pentland, Governor of Madras in 1916. The course was a venue for various Amateur Concert around the year.

The high range golf club was opened for ladies in the year 1941.

The high range club is built in an area of 6 acres and is partially surrounded by river. The planters of Munnar are the members of the club. The high range golf club is associated with 41 clubs in India. The golf course here is well maintained with 9 holes.

In 1934  the Dewan of Travancore was the first Indian to be made the member of the club

Cochin Golf Club

Cochin also known of the ‘queen of the Arabian sea’ is a magnificent place to be, with its natural beauty and charm. It is also famous for the historical monuments and tradition.

The Cochin Golf course was built in the year 1922 and is located over the Bolghatty Palace grounds.  The Bolghatty Palace was once the home of British Governors, it was built by the Dutch in 1744 A.D. The palace is now maintained by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation.

Trivandrum Golf Club

The Trivandrum Golf Club is one second oldest golf courses in India dating back 1850’s.

The course of Trivandrum Golf Club was established by the Maharaja of Travancore during the reign of Maharaja Sreemoolam Thirunal, the late king of erstwhile Travancore.

Trivandrum Golf Club was the major center for attraction for the tourist and business men who visited Trivandrum. The Trivandrum Golf Club is built adjacent to the Maharaja’s Palace.

The Trivandrum Golf Club having an age of more than 150 years is a heritage structure. It holds the tradition of a century. It is also one of the smallest golf courses in India.

The Trivandrum Golf Club has developed with time. Now it has around 400 members. The course is open round the year for domestic and international tourists.

There have been some allegations connected with the takeover of government land by the Trivandrum Golf Club and other clubs in the State. The revenue and law department should unite and fight against the high court decision of taking over the golf club.
